Three books that changed how I read
Not the best books I have read — the ones that changed the activity itself.

I used to measure reading in pages. These three books made that metric useless.
The first taught me to reread. I had always treated rereading as failure — as time I could have spent on something new. Now I think a first read is only reconnaissance, and the real reading begins the second time through.
The second taught me to abandon books. Thirty pages in, if nothing pulls, I stop without guilt. A book is an invitation, not an obligation. The pile by my bed has never been happier.
The third taught me to write while reading. Margins, a pencil, terrible shorthand. Reading without a pencil, I have come to believe, is just scrolling with better posture.
None of these books agree with each other. That is probably the point.
